Jagannath Temple Event - Chandan Yatra – Festival of Fragrance & Devotion - Jagannath Seva Event

Chandan Yatra – Festival of Fragrance & Devotion

Chandan Yatra is one of the oldest and most beautiful festivals of the Jagannath Temple. It marks the beginning of the annual festival cycle of Lord Jagannath.

“Chandan” means sandalwood, and “Yatra” means journey. During this festival, the deities are:

  • Smeared with sandalwood paste (to keep them cool in summer)
  • Taken out in ceremonial processions and boat rides

When is it celebrated?

  • Begins on Akshaya Tritiya (April–May in the English calendar)
  • Continues for 21 days

The most unique ritual: Boat Festival

The highlight is at the Narendra Tank in Puri:

  • Deities are placed on beautifully decorated boats
  • A symbolic water journey (Chapa Khela) is performed

This makes Chandan Yatra one of the rare Hindu festivals involving divine boating rituals.

Which deities take part?

Not the main idols inside the temple, but their representative forms:

  • Madana Mohana (represents Lord Jagannath)
  • Rama Krishna
  • Panchu Pandava

Two phases of the festival

  1. Bahara Chandan (Outer phase)
    • Processions and boat rides at Narendra Tank (21 days)
  2. Bhitar Chandan (Inner phase)
    • Rituals performed inside the temple premises (another 21 days)

Cultural & spiritual importance

  • Marks the start of preparations for Rath Yatra
  • Reflects a unique idea: treating the deity like a living being who feels heat and needs care
  • Attracts devotees and tourists to Puri
